99 Years Later

On August 15, 1922, my grandad Eugene Burkhart Freeman was born in Spokane, Washington. His life exemplified kindness, gentleness and generosity. He always had time for me growing up and when he died on September 4, 1983 his absence was and is still deeply felt. However, his legacy of his love of God, his family, and others lives on in the lives he touched. Consequently, this first posting on is dedicated to Eugene B. Freeman on the same day 99 years after his birth.

The world around us changes constantly but there is one thing that never changes, Jesus! “For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed.“ (Malachi 3:6 NASB) Hebrews 13:8 reinforces the Old Testament text when it says that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever.” (NASB) Our world is unstable and many people are thrust into changes due to circumstances surrounding them. For many, this can be difficult and disheartening. Just as death can impact loved ones left behind, we are forced to accept the reality of what is going on in our midst. Nonetheless, God does not change and is forevermore the same.

Thus, no matter what is happening, we can rest in the fact that the LORD never changes and is always ever present to help in our day of trouble. Psalm 91: 1-4 says, “One who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will lodge in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust’ For it is He who rescues you from the net of the trapper And from the deadly plague. He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may take refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and wall.” (NASB) In our turbulent times, we must learn to get under the wings of our Almighty God and rest, knowing that he is our refuge and fortress. When my grandad passed away 38 years ago, God was there upholding me up under His wings. His memory lives on in me and the others his life touched, and I can say without a doubt that his life changed mine for the better.

When troubles come our way and the world shakes our foundations of what we know and the experiences of everyday life, get under the strong and mighty wings of God and watch him work on your behalf. Seek and stay in the refuge and fortress of the Lord God Almighty!
